.Is the Pen Mightier Than
the Mouse?

Handwritten notes can make you stand out from the crowd.

Think about the last email you received. Who was it from? What was the message?

Now, think about the last handwritten note you received. If you are like the majority of people, that handwritten note has a much stronger staying power – you remember both the person who sent you the note and the message of the words inside.

I poll hundreds of business professionals every year on the impact of a handwritten note received in the mail. All of them – 100% of the individuals polled – have indicated that a handwritten note has an extremely high impact on their noticing and remembering the message. Read more about the mighty pen.

Turn Off the Technology?
With all our fancy technology, the world has definitely gotten smaller. Though the web seems endless, people who once lived worlds away now come into our businesses and homes via these portals. We have grown attached to our technology – so much that we've learned to continuously multitask in our business and personal lives. In a recent article, best-selling author Harvey Mackay uses the word "addicted" when writing about the three things we must to do to get our lives back:

1. Limit multitasking
2. Schedule your life
3. Disconnect

Read more. He's tough, but I think he could be on to something. We can't get totally away from technology – and we shouldn't – but we can tune out for a time and open up our lives again.

Tactile vs. Tech
If you love to write notes and letters like I do, you probably like to read books as well. Something about sending and receiving notes and letters is special, and sharing books with people goes beyond the ideas contained within them. To me, it is a tangible and tactile connection to the sender and the writer. Something good comes from an e-book's "greenness," space saving and easy traveling companion benefits, but I truly love holding a physical copy of a book in my hands. So heeding the words of Harvey Mackay again, here are some books and other resources to help in all aspects of your life and business.

.Postal rates rise, but there's hope
Okay, it happened again. The post office raised its first-class postage rate to 41¢ May 14. The stamp rate is still a bargain, in my opinion, but if you need to rant and go postal for a few days because you can't find 2¢ stamps to put with your 39¢ ones, know that this is the last time you will need to because help is here – and it's "forever."

It's the "Forever" stamp, and it's a new idea from the postal service. You can now purchase a nondenominational stamp that you can use forever, no matter how many times or how high they raise postage. For more information, visit this link. An idea whose time has come.

Health Tip: Fight Computer Fatigue
I saw these tips on www.realage.com at the end of April and thought we all need to refresh. The article reads "Does logging on give you headaches, blurred vision and dry eyes? Fight back with these tips. Make sure your eyes look down slightly when you work. Look away from your screen every half hour and focus on something 20 feet away. And leave your desk completely once every hour to give your eyes a break from the screen. Here's why."

Quote of the Month:
"Technology... the knack of so arranging the world that we don't have to experience it."
