Personal Branding
Personal branding, as defined on Wikipedia.com, is the process whereby people and their careers are marketed as brands.
“A personal brand is the idea of me in the minds of everyone I come in contact with.”
In the book The Brand Called You, author Peter Montoya says, “Personal branding lets you control how other people perceive you... You’re telling them what you stand for – but in a way that’s so organic and unobtrusive that they think they’ve developed that perception all by themselves. When done right, it’s irresistible so their sales resistance doesn’t kick into action.”
More Thoughts:
Your brand doesn’t mean anything if you don’t back it up with substance. In Sales Caffeine, the weekly e-zine, Jeffery Gitomer had this to say about your brand: “Brand is not just about becoming known and shouting your name. You have to back it up with the elements of quality, consistency, customer focus, customer help, response, service and customer attraction. Then throw in a dose of fun so that the customer BUYS!”
Rob Cuesta of The Branded Leader also emphasizes the importance of being authentic: “Let’s get one thing straight, though: personal branding is not spin. It is about being more authentic than you have ever been before. When you are clear about who you are, what you stand for, where you are going and what makes you different from everyone else who says the same thing; when you live your life consistently with that brand; and when you keep that brand constantly at the forefront of your target’s attention, you are well on the way to personal and professional success.” Read more of the article “ Are you making the most of your personal brand?”

What Others Are Saying
I recently asked a group of business professionals what benefits they see from sending handwritten notes and how that builds their brand:
“Personal notes differentiate and build integrity.” – Jack Fitzpatrick
“It confirms your commitment to your clients and customers by taking the time and not only writing a note, but your signature is a ‘contract.’ That makes a difference.” – Ray Miller
“Getting handwritten notes is not the norm in this day of IM-ing and email. A handwritten note makes you stand out. It also shows that you took time to personally reach out to the recipient.” – Kim Brame
“I always send a handwritten thank you note to people that I speak with at trade shows. It has worked well when calling those potential clients in the future.”
– Richard Jongko
The Wall Street Journal
I love it when intelligent media writes about communicating – especially when they praise writing with a pen. In a recent Wall Street Journal article titled “Reviving the Art of Putting Pen to Paper” (Aug 23, 2007: D2), author Abigail Pesta noted: “In an age when you can email President Bush and instant-message your boss, here’s one way to make an impression when writing to someone: pick up a pen and apply it to actual stationery.” Pesta also states, “It's sort of a rebellion to the impersonal nature of communicating electronically.” I sure agree.
